From the bustling city of Kampala to the remote villages in Katakwi, the acronym ADD or Action on Disability and Development is familiar amongst many persons with disabilities. Why the popularity? What does ADD do? Where does it operate? Who are brains behind the name?
Persons with disabilities in Uganda, like any low income nation of the world are marginalized in their families, at school, work, and medical facilities to mention but a few.
The 1987 ushered in a new government and new optimism for marginalized persons in Uganda. ADD partnered with existing groups of PwDs and some community based organizations and national organizations to kick start the process of building a movement that would foster the cause to bring PwDs from the periphery to the core. ADD’s special focus is on building capacity of disabled people’s organizations and advocacy.
Vision:
ADD’s vision of a world where all disabled people are able to enjoy their rights, fulfill their responsibilities and obligations and participate as fully as they choose at every level of society. Its a vision we have held for 21 years and still counting!
Values:
ADD deems that on this website you will learn more about our activities, scope and staff.
How we work:
ADD Uganda builds the capacity of representative, self financing disabled people’s organization (DPOs) which will spearhead continuous positive change. Ultimately, these DPOs will develop and sustain the disability movement in Uganda to foster social change that includes disabled people in all aspects of life and that embraces enjoyment of rights for them.
Secondly, ADD Uganda reinforces DPOs advocacy work. Therefore, DPOs can advocate effectively at national and other levels of implementation of policies and laws which:- 1) guarantee their rights 2) comply with constitution of Uganda, local laws and international human rights instruments.
