NUWODU is the National Union of Women with Disabilities of Uganda. It is an indigenous umbrella organisation of national and district based organisations of women with disabilities, that bring together all categories of women with disability in Uganda including the physically, sensory and mentally impaired women. NUWODU also recognises Uganda Parents Association of Children with Learning Difficulties (UPACLED). Vision: NUWODU was formed in November 1999 with a vision of having women with disability enjoying all benefits of society at all levels, living independently and having self-esteem and dignity from among themselves and from society. Mission: NUWODU mission is to facilitate unity, self-esteem and advancement of women with disability through advocacy, access to resources, education skills, development and Functional Adult literacy. Objectives: To address the special needs of women and girls with disability at all levels To advocate for equal opportunities and create awareness on the rights and potentials of women and girls with disability To unite groups of women with disability at the grass root and the existing national organization of women with disability. To act as a coordinating body of women with disability and to establish a market and information centre for women with disability in Uganda. To strengthen the decentralized groups of women with disabilities in Uganda through capacity building skills training, provision of assistive devices and specialized services. To mobilize resources for programmes of girls and women with disability. Generally the core programmes are: Advocacy and Networking: This program aims at influencing policy and program development in favour of women and girls with disability. It further focuses on advocating for the rights and full participation of WWDs and GWDs in all spheres of life including political, economic, social and cultural aspects of the communities where they live. For purposes of co-ordination, information sharing and the need to maximize the use of the limited resources available to WWDs in Uganda, NUWODU networks and collaborates with Government at both national and local levels, with NGOs and other institutions through meetings and workshops for purposes of coordination, information sharing and training to maximize the use of limited resources available to women and girls with disability in Uganda. Capacity Building: This aims at strengthening the participation of women and girls with disabilities to facilitate them to benefit from development programmes at all levels. This is achieved by training women and girls with disabilities in areas of: advocacy, leadership, entrepreneurship, planning and resource mobilization, etc. right from household level, leading to increased opportunities in employment and sustainable development. Research and Documentation: This program is designed to undertake research in various areas concerning women and girls with disability, compile and document data regarding the status of women and girls with disabilities to be used for planning and advocacy work at all levels to create awareness among women with disability, key stakeholders and the public. Institutional Development and Strengthening This aims at creating mechanism foe sustaining NUWODU work to its membership and stakeholders. The NUWODU structure comprises of three main components namely; The General Assembly: This is the supreme policy making body in NUWODU that meets once every Five years to alia, elect the Board of Directors, considers amendments to the Constitution of NUWODU, receive progressive and financial reports and to approve future plans of action and proposals of NUWODU. The General Assembly is comprised of delegates from the entire country. The umbrella associations of women with disability in the 56 districts of Uganda selects 2 delegates per district, and existing national associations of women with disability who are affiliated to NUWODU also send representatives for the General Assembly. Board of Directors: The Board of Directors are elected by the General Assembly with Geographical and disability balance as guiding principles. They are responsible for policy making and supervision of the organisations affairs and makes decisions on behalf of the General Assembly. It also recruits the secretariat. Secretariat: This is the executing body of NUWODU, which manages all programs, implements the decisions of the Board of director and takes care of the day-to-day running of the organization. The role of the Secretariat includes; Implementation of policies and decisions made by the Board of Directors and the day-to-day activities of the organization Organizing training of NUWODU membership Carrying out Advocacy and Lobbying Keeping and maintaining proper financial records Making reports and giving technical advise to the Board of Directors of the Organization. Safeguarding the assets of the organization Implementing, monitoring and reporting to donors regarding development activities funded accordingly. Membership. The membership of NUWODU is composed of a number of cross disability and unidisability groups of women with disability coming together at the district level, existing national associations of women with disability, unidisability Disabled persons organizations women wings and the national association of children with learning disabilities. NUWODU has conducted general assemblies and trainings in 26 districts (Tororo, Sironko, Gulu, Apac, Masindi, Kabale, Mubende, Busia, Kumi, Kisoro, Rakai, Luwero, Kamuli, Lira, Soroti, Masaka, Bugiri, Bushenyi, Lira, Arua, Wakiso, Kitgum, Pader, Kaberamaido, Katakwi, Kayunga).
