Having worked in Uganda for the 22 years, ADD has supported both national and district DPOs by building their capacity through mobilization of disabled people to form groups, election of leaders using democratic principles, constitutional development, training in organisational development and group dynamics and provision of funds to meet some of their operational costs among others. It has also worked with these DPOs to influence to government, civil society organizations and development agencies for positive change.
With the capacity of most of these DPOs fully built, ADD has increasingly disengaged from direct work with district unions/associations and passing on this support through the respective national umbrella organizations. This started about three years through the uni-disability associations of UNAB, UNAD and NUWODU.
The climax was reached on the 7th April 2009 when for the first time NUDIPU, with funding support from ADD was able to facilitate 12 district unions with operational costs for the year 2009. This came after several meetings which to the signing of a MoU in appreciation of the need to have direct engagement of NUDIPU and her membership and ADD’s changing role among things.
During the signing of agreements to support (ATSs) ceremony between NUDIPU and representatives of the 12 district unions held at Exotic Inn in Kampala, the Chairman NUDIPU Board, Mr. Kinubi Francis noted that this arrangement was long overdue. He emphasized that this was a new marriage that would be guarded jealously to ensure that its ideals are achieved. The acting Country Programme Director ADD, Mr.George Katumba pledged ADD continued support to NUDIPU and the Disability Movement at large to ensure full inclusion of all. This would a sense of ownership on the part of NUDIPU to its membership and recognition by the district unions of NUDIPU as their mother organization. Through joint monitoring of this new engagement, the sky can only be the limit for the disability fraternity in Uganda. This function was preceded by a training in financial management and basic accounting principles.
